She learned from kind friends and from weather reporters about wind chill or the wind chill factor. The chill was seasonal of course and in the summer all changed. She heard reporters statements like “A wind chill warning is the combination of very cold air and strong winds that would create dangerously low wind chill values. These factors result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia. Persons should avoid going outdoors and if they must go out they should wear warm protective clothing."
Local friends gave her advice about how to dress appropriately.
“Tammy,” they said “natural fibers like wool, cotton and linen would help you resist the chill invasion and allow the natural body heat to remain close. Synthetics like nylons and polyester invited the cold in and kept it close whereas the natural fibers defended you.”
Wind chill reminded Tammy of the adversary and the adversity that Christians were warned about by the Apostle Paul. In these times he advocated being prepared by putting on the armor of God. {Ephesians 6:10–18}
10 “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.”
As she studied the text she learned that children of God will face the wiles of the devil and spiritual wickedness in high places. God’s armor with the help of prayers and the Holy Spirit prepared them to do battle; as they must in this life.
Tammy also saw the similarities with wind chill. Just as wearing natural fibers of wool, cotton, and linen was the way to dress well in cold weather and enabled her to resist the chill, so conversely being dressed in synthetic nylon and polyester fabric when the chill came meant being unprepared to face the cold.
Taking the concept of wind chill, appropriate clothing and armor even further she could see, interestingly, that the Armor of God referred to what covers the child of God’s head, chest, feet, waist, their arm/hands and surroundings. Consider that winter clothing also refers to what is worn on our heads, upper body, feet, waist area, arms[hands] and the shield may be seen to refer to a winter coat.
Soldiers wear armor in battle, Christians were armor because they are in a battle, and people wear winter clothing for protection from the wind chill. This teaching of Paul aptly parallels these three scenarios.
Just so dressing in the cold weather was like a battle for survival. Dressing poorly can result in death through hypothermia. In a battle dressing poorly will result in death from the enemy’s arrows or spears. So again there are similarities that are worth considering.
In conclusion, dressing well meant winning the ‘battle’.
