The Dames are worried that I might convert their sons to my "alien faith." You'd think they believe that mating with me would turn their sons matricidal!
Mother is a smart Dame, and says she will find a mate for me somehow. Hopefully it will be with a Qlag, and not some off-worlder who simply wants a different mating experience. But I will trust my mother. What else am I to do?
She comes into my room and gives me a shot to take the hormonal edge off. Then she speaks to me for the first time today, having immersed herself in her electronic records search for a suitable family. "Tomorrow, my beloved child, we will have guests. A Sire, whose Dame left him when he accepted Christ, will bring his son for an interview. I will give you another shot of tri-estrogen prior to their arrival. Will that give you enough control to sit in on the interview?"
"Yes, it will, Mother. Even if it were difficult, I would never dishonor you."
I have to admit I am worried about a guy, hopefully near my age, without his Dame's influence. But I have made a promise, and I will not disrespect my House by breaking my word. After all, if a young woman can't trust her Dame, who can she trust?
At mid-day the next day, the father and son arrive. The Sire's clothing shows signs of disrepair, which means he is not of as high status as Mother, but the son's looks brand new. I am pleased by the obvious sacrifice they have made to honor our House.
I notice two other things about him that I find attractive. One is his blue eyes, which make me wonder if my offspring would have my gold eyes or his blue eyes. The other thing is the visual texture of his long, meticulously groomed black and white fur, which looks very soft.
His Sire makes the ritual noises about his House helping ours, but it is his ritually silent son who gets my attention. His Sire looks strong, as does he, introduced as Rodek. I have met many other Qlag growing up, who were interested in me. I often wondered if they really wanted to be my mate, or just use my Dame to elevate the status of their House. In Rodek I sense none of that, just a good Christian man who is willing to help a young lady in distress.
After Mother and the Sire, Kurn, exchange ritual greetings, we are allowed to speak to each other. I ask, "You are a believer in Christ as well as your Sire?"
In his deep purrish accent he answers, "I am. If you are willing to become my mate for life, I will suppress instinct and forsake all others. It is not the Qlag way, but it is the way of Believers, true?"
We talk while Mother interviews Kurn. As they stand, indicating the discussion is over, my Mother's happy face seems to show her approval of Rodek. She twitches a quizzical tail at me, and I answer with a flick of my tail.
Rodek and I stand, paws entwined, and formally announce our intention to pursue a permanent pairing. I hope that Mother can find mates for my sisters that they get along with.
Mother shows Kurn to our home computer and begins the government paperwork for the pairing of our Houses. "Well, as they say off-world, seems like a whirlwind romance for our children. But I trust Belloq's judgement."
