Trish had lived on the streets for the past two years, as a runaway from the family group home which was supposed to have been a safe haven but had in fact turned into a nightmare of abuse and violence. As her parents had died in a car accident caused by an out of control log truck on a winding mountain road, the welfare department had assumed guardianship three years ago. Her only other living relative was an older brother Bobby, who worked as a saw doctor at the local timber mill.
Bobby had been a great help but was unable to give Trish the support she needed. He arranged regular food parcels and was constantly in touch with the welfare department who were helpless to bring her back as physical force was not an option.
Trish raised her head above the lid of the skip bin and saw a lone figure approaching. She froze, expecting the worst, but when she heard her name being spoken she hesitantly stepped into the open to be confronted by a youngish woman with long dread locks and scruffy street clothes.
“Hi Trish, don’t be afraid, trust me, I’m here to help”.
An icy hand of fear gripped Trish as the word “trust” was the cause of her predicament, she prepared to flee but the woman had anticipated her intentions and simply sat down on the cold tarmac of the car park in the orange glow of the overhead lights. Surprised, Trish relaxed and approached the stranger.
“Who are you and what do you want”, Trish stammered.
The woman smiled and replied, “My name is Judy and I’m from City Mission, we are here to help people like you by offering a warm bed, a decent meal and assist in finding suitable accommodation”.
Trish had no idea where this was heading but anything was better than what she was trying to cope with up to now. Judy sounded sincere and the promise of a meal and a warm bed was irresistible.
Judy stood up, extending her hand to Trish who responded and was reassured by what seemed a genuine touch of friendship. The warm touch of another human being was very much overdue.
Judy continued to explain how they could help her but there was a condition: “You can help us to help you by cooperating, a form of trust and obey, we will work with each other and assure you that we will support you every step of the way”.
Trish was overwhelmed but relieved, would it really be possible to escape this heartbreak and misery.
Judy had a car waiting and soon had Trish settled in at their refuge. A hot shower and a hearty meal assured her that this time she was in safe hands.
During the following days Trish familiarised herself with her new surroundings and although temporary she felt secure and safe.
Judy had told her that Bobby had spoken to the Pastor of their local church of which their family had been members prior to the death of their parents. Pastor Desmond had contacted the mission and as he had been unable to reach out to Trish in the past this was an opportunity to do so.
Judy and Desmond had worked together with a commitment to locate Trish and support her to put the shattered pieces of her life together again.
During one of the counselling sessions Judy had opened her bible to Proverbs 3: 5 sharing these words, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”.
Trish’s faith was being rekindled and as she exhaled the pollution of the world she was able to inhale the beauty of God’s love and presence.
After several weeks at the mission Pastor Desmond and his church team had been able to enrol Trish in the local school and a church family had provided a secure home.
Trish was also assisting Judy at the mission and trust, obedience and hope were returning to her life.
