Well no need to hurry she thought, guess I’ll lie here a few more minutes and then grab a bite to eat. With that thought she curled back up and shut her eyes. Five more minutes she thought, five more minutes.
Slowly she opened her eyes again and looked at the clock, 10 a.m. Whoops that was a little longer than 5 minutes. Oh well she thought, guess I’ll get up and get some breakfast. She slipped on her slippers padded down the hall to the kitchen. Wow, these floors are dirty, guess I better add vacuuming to my list today.
On the refrigerator there was a note from her husband, “Honey please do some laundry today, I’m out of socks and underwear. Also, we need groceries so please go to the store today. Love John.” She frowned. What was he talking about there’s plenty of food in the fridge and didn’t I just do the laundry? She set the note down and opened the refrigerator. It was empty. Oh, well maybe we do need groceries guess I’ll have to skip exercise to squeeze in the grocery shopping.
She walked over to the laundry room but she had trouble getting the door open. When she finally did get it open she saw that the door had been blocked by all the piles of laundry strewn about the floor. Dang! Now I have to find the time for laundry too! I’ll start a load in five more minutes.
Her stomach growled. Well better eat something before I do anything else. She rummaged through the freezer and managed to find a frozen burrito. It was past its expiration date but didn’t smell too bad. She rummaged around in the cabinets and then the counters looking for a clean plate. Nope, just dirty ones. She tossed the burrito in the microwave.
As it cooked she wandered into the bathroom and checked herself in the mirror. She dug around through the cluttered counter until she found her hair brush and toothbrush but was unsuccessful in finding the paste. Shrugging her shoulders she brushed her teeth with just water and ran the hair brush threw her tangles.
She looked at her clothes and deciding she could get away with wearing her pajama’s to the store so she didn’t bother changing.
She thought about putting a load of clothes in but heard the microwave timer go off decided to wait until she got back with the groceries and sat down in front of the T.V. to eat her burrito. It was now 10:15. When she finished eating she started to get up and go but another of her favorite shows came on. Oh, wait, I love this. Okay, I’ll give myself five minutes to watch it. It’s a re-run anyway, so just five more minutes.
Wow, this show gets funnier every time I watch it she thought to herself. Glancing over to the clock she was shocked to see it was now 1:30 in the afternoon. Shoot! I still need to go get groceries and do laundry. Well I probably need laundry soap anyway, so I’ll start the laundry later. Grabbing her keys and purse, she ran out the door, still in her slippers and throwing a coat over her pajamas.
At the store, she grabbed items off the shelf without even looking at them and soon she had a whole cart full. Heading for the check-out she heard a voice behind her call her name. Pastor Janet from church came running over to hug her and then scanned her up and down looking for some compliment to give her but instead she was shocked by her appearance.
“Are you alright?” the woman asked.
“Of course!” she lied, “I am perfect. No problems. “
“Have you heard from John lately?” asked the concerned woman.
“What? Well yes. He left me a note this morning asking me to do the laundry and pick up groceries, so here I am,” she replied.
The woman was silent for a long time. Finally she took Mary’s hand and holding it in her own she said quietly, “Sweet heart, John left you over a month ago.”
