“Hey Hon,” Dave strolled into the kitchen, “supper almost ready?”
“Ten minutes. Wanna set the table?” Jen nodded toward the plates before she started cutting up tomatoes for a salad.
Dave reached for the plates and started strewing them across the table. Jen glanced over with a grin as he started whistling Yankee Doodle.
“Someone is in a good mood,” she teased.
“I have two beautiful children, food in the oven and a gorgeous lady smiling at me. Why shouldn’t I be happy?” Dave stole a piece of tomato, pausing to kiss his bride of seven years.
“The food came before the gorgeous lady?”
“Just wanted to make sure I could emphasize the last part, is all.” Dave pulled open the cutlery door, and grabbed four forks. “Do we need knives?”
“Nope. It’s macaroni casserole.”
“Kay.”
Footsteps came thundering down the stairs. “Mom!”
“In here, Nick,” Jen called, looking down at her son as he tumbled into the room.
“Mom, what is rain?”
“What?” Jen paused with her knife in midair.
“Lisa says it comes from us squirting water into the air with squirt guns, but I did that yesterday, and it hasn’t rained yet.”
Jen grinned at Nick and watched affectionately as Dave squatted down to look his son in the eyes. “You know what rain really is, Nick? It is God weeping because His children aren’t listening.”
“Really?” Nick thought for a moment. “Wait ‘till Lisa hears that!” He galloped out of the room, calling for his sister.
“Dave, you shouldn’t lie to him.” Jen chided.
“Lie? How do you know it isn’t true?”
“I majored in science for a year at College, Mr. Businessman. I think I know where rain comes from.”
“Me too. From God.” He ducked as she tossed a dishtowel at him.
“Put the salad on the table.” Jen handed him the wooden bowl.
“I’m right.”
“Maybe.”
Footsteps. “Mom!”
It was Lisa this time. “What makes thunder and lightening?”
“Well...” Jen began, hoping to beat her husband to this answer, but stopped as he interrupted.
“Lightening means God is taking your picture, so He can remember how beautiful you are. Thunder means He is laughing at something wonderful.”
This time Jen barely waited until her child left the room before she faced Dave, hands on her hips. “Dave! That is sacrilegious!”
He placed the salad on the table, “That God laughs?” He kept his face serious, which cracked Jen up.
Chuckling, she placed the remainder of the lettuce back in the fridge before replying. “I always heard that thunder was God’s applause.”
“Strange. I heard it was His roar of anger.”
They both shared a laugh before the footsteps came pattering back.
“Dad? How about snow?”
Jen raised her eyebrows at her husband, and Dave grinned back.
“God sneezed.”
