TITLE: Just Among Friends | Previous Challenge Entry

The two good friends married within 2 months of each other in the fall of the year, the first married, Evelyn was out done by Beatrice.
Their children started coming like stair steps almost always three months apart, give or take a few. They all attended the same small town church and each had a job to do each Sunday. Both ladies taught Sunday school, and they held Bible game competitions, sometimes it got really fierce as they tried to lead their class to victory.
Evelyn Good married a mild mannered man named Hugh Hustle and they lived in the yellow house on the same small street. And of course Beatrice Better lived in the green house and she married Bus Bustle.
The friendship got off to the best start among the four of them, until Christmas time started to approach. Each of the ladies began acting like a big game had begun. Each year they tried to outdo one another with their decorations. If one put out lights, the other put out more. If one used a certain brand of lights the other used a bigger, brighter set. Evelyn set out a Nativity scene, and Beatrice set out a bigger set.
As the years past and the children came, it always got worse; the two good friends barely had time for talking for they were busy, too busy to stop and talk and the kids were going here and there, some in the choir, and some in the pageant. Heaven help them if they were in the same pageant. There seemed no time to get together as they once did.
However, they had decided back then that they would take turns hosting Christmas, so for one it meat even more of hectic time. It got so bad that many times there was no time for church events or helping with the church dinner, or baking, and of course there was no time for visiting people.
Mrs. Hustle and Mrs. Bustle were too busy running around and getting involved with the material things at Christmas, the newest decorations, the long list of gifts and more gifts, the special gifts, and let’s not forget the sales. Along with that the food had to be just so! Many years they missed the true meaning and the joy and peace of the season and because they did, their families suffered too.
Over the years the children left home and married, and they too started their traditions, which was much like their mothers. It was hard for the children to take time to visit their parents, for following in their footsteps it left little time for God, church, family and for the peace and joy of the season, not to mention the real reason for the season.
Many years later, when the ladies couldn’t hustle and bustle anymore, they sat quietly at the kitchen table as they sipped their tea and talked among themselves.
“What happened to the children?” Beatrice wanted to know.
“How could they get themselves so busy as not to enjoy this special time?” Evelyn sighed as she picked up her cup of tea.
What was really important? Jesus, for He was the reason for the season. And of course the children needed to include their parents in their plans.
The poor ladies could not understand this modern generation; why couldn’t their grandchildren stop playing on those Gameboys, or texting on the cell phones. They did not have time to talk to their grandparents, or each other. It was just too much hustle and bustle in their children lives; couldn’t they see what they were doing?
Mr. Hustle looked at Mr. Bustle as he scratched his head in amazement; a big grin began to appear on their faces, for many times they wished their last names had been Hugh Calm and Bus Collected.
