Topic: Think (09/02/10)
“Look at that squirrel Jim, he is looking in that classroom window. He hasn't moved for the last 30 minutes. I sure would like to know what's goin' on in his mind.” Ted and Jim had been studying on the lawn.

“Yeah,” Jim started gathering books. “We better get to class and hope our minds work.”

I have monitored this class for a while. It says Philosophy 101 on the wall. So far, I hear schedules and grades. I hope she says something else pretty soon.

Teacher is saying, Rene' Descartes, a renown philosopher, made a statement some time ago that makes me wonder if any other animal can think. He said, 'I think, therefore I am'

Wow, this is more like it.

'I think, therefore I am'. 'I' means the person in human speak. So, I think about a lot of things. I think. I am as important as a person! I am going to learn more. I'll show them a squirrel that thinks!

Opinions, thoughts, deceive, truth, discerning, reflecting. I have not learned the exact meaning of these words. Now, another human is standing. He is going to the machine called computer and is hitting the keys. Look, words are coming on the screen. It says dic-tion-ary. Now, conceive. 'To conceive is to hold an opinion, think, believe.' Oooops! I almost fell off my sill trying to see the computer.

I need to get into this place and learn how to use that dictionary! Let me record some of these other words; then I will try to find a way in. Dis tink le, Not douting, existence, phi-los-o-fiz-ing so-lu-tion, diffi-cul-ties. I will find a way to prove to humans that animals do think. Why, sometimes I think so much I miss eating time.

I have enough words to start on. Now, I had better start looking around for a way to get into this place. The people are leaving the room! I can go in where they come out. I will go this way, into the higher tree, Now the roof, That spot is hot. I will run fast. There they are, Teacher is leading. I am jumping off roof now. Om, I see a place to go in. Hey, don't step on me! That foot was bigger than me. I wonder what would happen if I jumped on that person. Would it be as much fun as the cat? Hmmm. Work, Stew, not play.

Whew, I am in now, no human hurt me; although, humans have big feet. This place is like the inside of a big tree! Lots of metal chairs setting around in different parts. Lots of computers. I know what writing is, it is putting speak on paper using symbols called alphabet. I know who made up the symbols for my language, but I don't know who made it for the humans. It must have been a lot of humans doing it because sometimes the same alphabet combination, means different things. We have each word spelled one way and it always means the same thing.

English has 2 ways to spell bear, b-e-a-r & b-a-r-e. Pronounced the same, used different ways. B-o-u-g-h, is spoke, no, said ,like b-o-w. Tough, same o-u-g-h, is pronounced tuf. That's what makes english hard to learn.

There is the place where Teacher was. The computer with dictionary is there. Now, I can get somewhere; okay, I need to see what happens when I press this. The letter p! Let me see, d- i-s t-n-k-l-y, now, human pushed big key. 'Distinctly, adv of distinct. Distinguished as not being the same. Not identical.' This is hard. Lets see, 's-a-m-e, identical with what is about to be or has just been mentioned. Identical though having different names. In the same manner.' Wow,I can learn very quickly with this! This dictionary knows what word I want even though I don't use the right alphabet. I like this. I can come in here every day, and learn more.

Now, what was that complete saying? It started with I think. I do think, I think about human speak, about food, females, what tree to build in. Whether to go tease the dogs by running along the high wires so they can't get me. Whether to jump off the wire onto that troublesome cat … What tree has the best berries. I think. Now, punch keys.

I Thimk, Therfor …..

Oh my, I think I need to try again.

This is an adorable look into a squirrel's mind. You have a delightful sense of humor. I did notice a typo or two but the knowledge that other's wonder what the squirrel looking into my window is thinking,makes any mistake no big deal. I really enjoyed the story and the POV was original and fun!

lol Yeah, what Shann said. The point of view is very cute and it does sound like the way a squirrel might think: very quickly with few pauses. Here's two short suggestions. In this sentence "Opinions, thoughts, deceive, truth, discerning, reflecting" you could change "deceive" to "deception" to create parallel constructions. Second, you could find a way to make the ending even funnier. Maybe have the squirrel type something and end with "by Drew the squirrel." Very good! I'll remember this one.
