Carol’s skin started to crawl and she looked for a door. Warm heat spread over her belly and her stomach flip-flopped.
“Your poetry is very moving” the teacher studied her, “and... well, I’m worried about you. These are very intense words."
Panicked, she ran out behind a few unintelligible syllables, a wild drumbeat in her chest. She wasn’t sure if she’d heard her right. No one loved her. Was this love? Maybe. Maybe not. But concern was her addiction, and this was a meal being served. Her love-starved heart craved the attention this older woman offered her. How could she tell her that no, she wasn’t raped? She didn’t know why she hurt so bad. She just did.
After class the next day Carol approached the crazy woman. She shoved a piece of crisp paper into her hand and stared at the ground. Long and agonizing moments passed. What was taking her so long? The note only said thank you for caring. What was she doing?
Suddenly she felt arms around her, and a whisper, “I knew it was true. I’m so sorry.” She nearly crumpled. Oh dear God. Help me. “Was it somebody close?” the teacher asked.
No! This can't be happening! I never said that! Carol begged her lips to say the words. They finally broke with a rushing wave of emotion and a single tear. “Yes.”
