I sat on the bus hoping to do something low key. Once the bus stated to roll I tried hanging on with the arm that was not throbbing from throwing a heavy round object repeatedly down a wooden lane. Imagine the horror on my face when we turned into the parking lot of the Fox Tail Roller Rink! Roller skating? Were they insane? My feet had not seen the inside of rollers skates in at least twenty-two years. As my daughter encouraged me to participate I took the roller skates by the laces and said three million little prayers for safety. Balance is not my strong suit, however within minutes I had three laps under my belt and was feeling pretty confident. As I “flew” by my daughter she yells over the teeny bop music I was doing great and then as I turned my head to ask what she said I found the wall! After slowly circling the wooden floor of the arena a few more times I began to gain confidence, I felt fifteen again and so I increased my speed. Just when I thought I had everything under control something swooped the skates right out from under my feet (I think the something was called over confidence!). Two hours later, bruised buttocks and all, we left the skating adventure behind us and eagerly awaited our next destination.
Relief filled my spirit when we stopped for pizza and Karaoke, something more my speed. Now singing in front of fifty people is not my idea of fun but I’d give it a shot. As the girls began singing I noticed that not many were singing songs age appropriate. I hoped as I flipped through the pages of songs to find a Christian section but no luck. A fellow girl scout and I chose to sing “Jesus Take the Wheel”. My knees were wobbling as I headed towards the stage. You would think by now I would be over the stage fright era in my life however it had magnified. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen even though I knew every word of the song by heart. After the lyrics faded from the screen the director pried the microphone from my hand and scooted me off the stage. This was difficult with the numbness in my hand from holding the mic so tightly and the weakness in my legs from stage fright.
A few lessons were learned during my excursion with the younger girls of my community. I learned though the age on my license is thirty-seven my body after all that forced activity felt like ninety! I learned God places us in situations which may be uncomfortable but after we suffer the embarrassment and strain on our bodies we really can appreciate the fact we are still able to move as well as we do. Besides if we didn’t go through life living every moment to it’s fullest what would we be able to look back on and laugh about? I thank God for four wheels and bowling balls because of this I was able to make memories with my daughter, (if she’ll ever be seen in public with me again after my attempt at dancing while at the bowling alley).
