As the wind blew cold and eerily out side, clouds played hide and seek with the moon. The moon knew a secret.
Tree shadows hunted the pale gray walls casting wicked figure that lurked about the room.
Eight year old Nickie trembled, not wanting to talk. She lay rolled up so tight in her blanket, like a cocoon, she could barely breath or move. Wedged between the wall and her bed, she feels the pressure of being trapped and secure.
Her face still throbbed from the day before. A fat split lip was tingling but, to sore to touch. Her eyes swollen and discolored were sensitive to any light or movement.
Quiet tears trickled down her face. She felt so horribly rejected, unloved, totally alone.
"What if someone comes in?, They won't see me...That's the Idea." Nickie thought to herself. It will be at least one night she might be able to sleep. If only she could settle the thoughts that ran wild in her mind. she could not think straight.
It was Nickie's first night in this foster home. She had been in one before, when she was seven. Sharing a room with an other girl who was the same age, somebodies daughter. She was not alone then, this time she is.
Little Nickie could not trust her own parents, how can she trust a total stranger. There were no men in this house hold. She was not sure if she could trust an old women she didn't know.
Remembering the first foster home family. Nickie dreamed of the things they did together, watching T.V. playing in the snow, eating dinner, and they talked.
One thing they did was take her to church. She never went before.
Remembering how it felt being in a room full of strange people she never met before. They were nice, kind and inviting, "I felt so stupid there". Nickie thought." I had no Idea what they were talking about". She remember how awkward it felt. They told her someone was watching over her, keeping her safe, all the time. she wondered if she was being stalked.
Who was this person?, why could she not see him?. To little Nickie it was impossible to ever feel safe again.
She had been insulted and violated in every possible way, which she had no control. Living with a life sentence. Even thinking about life with the shame and guilt Nickie felt was more than she could bare.
There was no escape. Every one must be able to see how useless, stupid and week she was.
Hopeless, powerless at this time, Nickie couldn't care less if she live another day. She was done.
Yet in the back of her mind ..."There is someone who loves you, cares and is watching over you, keeping you safe". How... how was that person she can not see keeping her safe...all the time. she really didn't think so, couldn't be. She just could not imagine or understand.
Nickie finally slipped into a painless, comfortable, deep sleep. It would not be until she had children of her own that she understood the magnitude of the lesson she lived.
There is someone who really did watch over her and keep her safe...and he's still watching.
