“Jesus,” she whispered. “Where will I go?”
A rat came out of its hole to eat the crumbs under her seat.
“Well, Joshua,” she said to the rat. “Thank you for letting me stay with you anyway. You and your family have been very kind. All of my friends have either died or gone to jail. You’re all I’ve got left. Looks like I’ll be leaving you, too.”
The rat paid no attention as he finished his meal and darted back to his hole.
She took one more glance at the letter and slowly raised herself from the chair, pausing to catch her balance.
“Happens every time they get new staff at the welfare office. They cut off my money, and I get one of these letters. Well, if my back isn’t too bad tomorrow I’ll go to the office and get things right.”
If tomorrow were anything like the today, though, she knew that an hour on the bus followed by the wait at the Welfare Office was impossible. It was almost too much to get out of bed and sit in her chair all day.
“If Richie hadn’t gone with those kids and gotten himself shot, maybe he could have gone with me.”
Richie was her grandson. She remembered him as a boy, always with a smile on his face. You couldn’t help but to feel joy in his presence. She remembered how that smile changed to an angry glare almost the minute he turned 16. Now he was dead.
She didn’t bother to change as she went to her bed.
“Dear Father in heaven, I know you’re there. At least that’s what they told me as a girl, and I believed it. Show me your kingdom because I ain’t seen it yet.”
She lay down. A shot rang out, just as it happened almost every night. She closed her eyes.
It seemed like she’d only just fallen asleep, like she hadn’t even blinked when she was awakened by the sound of a trumpet. All around her shone a blinding light, but she could see clearly the man stretch His hand out to her. She could see clearly the scar on his hand as though someone had driven a nail right through it. She reached out to take His, barely noticing that the wrinkles had smoothed away and her skin was like that of a young girl’s. Looking into His face, a joy came over her that she just Knew would never be taken away.
