Soft rock music from the past would play in the background and often make me reminisce of my teenage years while the bumps on the road would remind me of driving the 1968 Chevy truck my grandpa gave me in the eighties just before he died.
“Oh Lord, I thank You for being there for me back then in my daring, younger years. You were there for me then and You are here with me now, in my deeper struggles. I can still feel Your touch and hear Your soft voice whispering in the breeze, especially on these rides to group and then again back home. You have called me to embrace and dedicate to You this hour of prayer with the sweetness of all that You have created in nature around me; I know You are with me.”
As our van was going from one stop to the next I found myself silently ending the prayer, asking for “God’s angels to protect us on the way home.” All of a sudden, I was jolted from my very intimate feelings of worship when the van’s tire blew out; part of the tire tore down the road like a Frisbee in a roller-derby... Suddenly, total chaos broke out and I am sure that our screams could be heard for miles.
A lady from the back yelled, “Jesus, please, save us!” The van then ran off the road rolling down a hill into a ditch full of water. The water started to slowly rise inside the van, initially causing a fear in my heart - then I remembered all of the times that the Lord would talk to me and the peace His Presence would always bring.
The van driver leapt into action-mode and unfastened his seat-belt. He was doing what he could to help his passengers out of their seats onto dry-land. Then I heard an audible voice tell me that I was to unbuckle my seat belt as well. I cried out in prayer, “Jesus give me the strength and courage I need for this over-whelming task.”
After unbuckling my seat-belt I lowered myself down into the water. Henry, the van driver, told me to go help Mrs. Childs with her wheel chair. Mrs. Childs was a sweet elderly lady who happened to be blind, and the only physically disabled passenger on the van.
I cried out, “Mrs. Childs can you hear me?”
No one answered as I made myself back toward the end of the van where the emergency exit was located behind her wheel chair. Quickly opening the exit door, I then called for Henry who was helping the last passenger out of their seat. The wheel chair was still fastened to the floor so I had to gingerly pick up Mrs. Childs and carry her out of the van. Henry then made his way back to me and together we both carried her to safety.
Thankfully, in not too much time at all, Mrs. Childs was sitting outside with the sun-light pouring little prisms over her wheel-chair as she sat cheerfully humming along with the birds in the spring air.
Then Mrs. Childs exclaimed, “Well praise the Lord! Where are the angels that saved me?”
Henry gestured, “It was only Mr. Foster and I who helped you, Mrs. Childs.”
Her face was beaming as she smiled, “No, I know that Jesus was on this van when everything was in chaos, and it was He and His angels were all protecting us.”
We all looked around, but no one said a word… I also knew that God had been there with us that day just like He has always been there for me during all of the many wonderful conversations we’ve had together.
