All we had at our disposal against these internationally-feared bikers was prayer, so members of each church gathered together in a local motel conference room, and began.
Little did we know that they had chosen to stay at this same motel.
Tattoo-laden thugs tried to portray themselves as gentlemen by opening the door for everyone who walked through, but we came against that deception by blessing them with “Jesus loves you”.
They offered rides on the back of their motorcycles, and one little 70-year-old Christian woman took them up on it, talking of Jesus in their ears for the whole ride.
We prayed for the safety of the additional 300 police officers who came from across Canada to ride one-on-one with each gang member. Kenora doesn’t have many roads, because we are really just a number of beautiful islands joined by bridges, and that many extra vehicles on our few roads could have been dangerous.
In the end, the biker gang decided not to make us their playground, and we breathed a sigh of relief. But we did not stop praying.
Every 18th of the month from that day forward, we have continued with our Sweet Hour of Prayer by gathering in this same motel room. We call it Pray Kenora now, have extended the time to two hours, and we pray for righteousness to rise in our town hall; for justice and peace to increase in our country's government; for safety to reign on our roads, bridges and waterways; for fire to be non-existent in our forests, for more industry and jobs to be added to our town, and we pray that deception in all of its forms will be routed out and exposed.
The results of this Sweet Hour have been amazing:
The Kenora businessman who was an associate in the local Hell’s Angels' chapter, and who organized the retreat in 2001, came to faith in Jesus Christ in 2012, and has written a book about his experience.
On the 18th of January 2006, five years after our initial meeting, we witnessed a local restaurant owned by another one of the local Hell’s Angels, finally shut down.
Ministers spoke truth to power at a public town council meeting, and sure plans to build a Gambling Casino still have not materialized.
Early every morning for a year, I quietly laid hands in Jesus’ name on the house that was owned by another one of the Hell’s Angels' members, and he has now packed up and moved away.
One of the local bootleggers has come to faith in Jesus Christ, and has shut down his trade.
The Mayor has declared that as long as he is in power, there will be a manger scene of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus outside of City Hall, and prayer will begin each monthly Council meeting.
“Can you not watch with me one hour?” Jesus said in Matthew 26:40, as he asked the disciples to pray with him against danger. We have answered Jesus that we will, and have determined that through our hour of prayer, Lord willing, there will be no danger in Kenora - not on our watch.
