Pizzeria Ono is on the corner. The manager sometimes brings us leftover pizza on Friday and Saturday nights. He used to have a little too much starch in his collar, but the Lord loosened his yoke a little so He could provide for us.
Last Sunday I was sitting here and this guy with a bigger beard than mine came over and handed me a breakfast from McDonald’s. I think it made his day more than it made mine.
A black Cadillac Escalade pulls up at the stop light. There is a child in the back seat drawing smiley faces on the fogged up window. Through her finger art she sees me and rolls down her window. Sitting there with a lime green shirt, reindeer antlers and smiling with her two front teeth missing she says to me,
“Hey mister, do you know how to catch snowflakes on your tongue? Here watch its easy. If you can get one they taste like Christmas.” I’m no musician, but I think there’s a song in there somewhere.
The light turned green and as the tail lights got smaller and smaller, the child yells out, “Happy Thanksgiving!!!” Her well wishes on this cold night made me just a little bit warmer.
About seven minutes later the same vehicle pulls up again. Both the drivers side and rear windows go down. The driver, the dad asks, “May we have a few minutes of your time?”
The child in the back is trying to talk over her father and doing a good job of it and begins asking me,
“Did you eat today? You know its Thanksgiving right? Did you eat? Are you hungry? We have food. Lots of it and we want to share it with you. Come eat, are you hungry? Come on lets eat!”
Being there was little road movement tonight they did a u-turn and pulled up to the curb right in front of me.
“Good evening sir, I’m Jim and this is my daughter Dorrel.”
“Hi I’m Dorrel, all my friends call me Dory, what’s your name?”
“Hello Dory I’m Johnny.”
Grabbing my hand she says, “Come on Mr. Johnny lets get something to eat.”
Jim looks at me and asks, “Is there somewhere we can set up or this fine right here?”
Honestly Jim the smells in there tonight have really made their presence known. That’s why I was sitting here. Even though it’s snowing, I had to get some fresh air.
So there we were. The three of us under the hatch of the car getting ready to share a Thanksgiving meal together. And to my surprise, to also share our thanks we’ve been given
as well.
While we were grazing together over all the leftovers I felt comfortable enough to ask Jim if he was a single parent. He explained that the night before his wife gave birth to their second daughter, and because of the holiday they weren’t going to release her until tomorrow. So they decided to have Thanksgiving in her hospital room.
Dory asked me if I go to church and before I could answer.
“Daddy, daddy can we bring Mr. Johnny with us to church and sing Christmas carols together. We go to the Epworth Methodist Church. Do you know where that is? Even if you don’t we’ll take you there.”
“My favorite song is “Oh Holy Night” and singing the last verse, “Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease.”
“That’s how God wants us to act, and we’re doing it right now, right daddy?”
“I see that you have yourself a little religious prodigy on your hands.”
“She is like this all the time. Always thinking about others and always trying to help someone. My wife calls her little Mother Teresa.
“Is that why you came back?”
“As soon as she started talking to you I knew we weren’t going home yet. She is truly an inspiration to all she comes in contact with.”
