“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but that I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” -Philippians 3:12 (NKJV)
Remember when the belief was that the world was flat? When there was an end? A destination? A specific place you could lay hold of?
We are hard wired, it seems, for arrivals. We desire to achieve our goals and check them off. We long for that sense of accomplishment. This desire can creep into our walk with Christ. We look around at other Christians who we feel have “made it” or have attained a certain level. We judge our success as a Christian by the world’s standards and not those of Christ. We count our trophies, our badges and accolades and determine whether or not we have achieved the relationship with Christ that we are comfortable with or not. We set out on this journey expecting to reach the other side without totally letting go of the comforts of home. Christopher Columbus said, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Until we have surrendered all we do not get to experience God’s plan for our lives.
I remember thinking when we left job, home and family to serve in a different country that we would achieve a task. We were going to complete some project. However, when we got there we only saw more mountains, valleys and horizons. God was inviting us into this cycle where we would constantly be refined. “Further in” as CS Lewis put it.
We acknowledge that while in this life we will never reach it, but we will constantly subject ourselves to Him to continue the process. Let us not look around to others and mistake stagnation for achievement. Let us take the small successes as encouragement to continue the journey and not to linger on this step. Let us always be looking around the corner for the next thing God is doing in our lives. Our walk should be no more flat than this planet. There is always room for one more step.
