Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Singing (10/31/05)
This is the darkest day of my life. How I fooled myself into believing that I was ready to hike a terrain like this is beyond any reasonable logic. I’ve been wandering for countless hours. The skills that I possess should have spared me this life threatening experience. If my calculations are correct I began this trek heading in a South by South-West direction, so if I travel North by North-East I’ll be right where I want to be shortly. That tree looks very familiar to me, so I must be navigating correctly. The rare bird I’m looking at, I’ve seen earlier, it’s a good sign. I feel panic, it’s trying to overtake me, but I’m too strong, I won’t allow it, I will prevail. Uh oh! It’s getting dark out here. Why? Why? Why did I do this? Maybe before it gets too dark, I’ll find a patch of dirt, use my finger and write out my will, to make sure everything is distributed as I desire it to be. I realize there is not any way I could survive this. I can feel myself growing weaker rapidly. It’s freezing, I wish that I had worn a sweater. Those berries look edible, but my senses scream Toxic. If I get through this night, how long will I last without eating? It’s too bad that my last breakfast was a small one. I can see my ribs, some. I give up! This is my resting place. I can’t move any further. Right here at this tree trunk, I’ll sit, and this is where I’ll give up the ghost! An old song comes to my mind as I sit here, “Woke up this morning with my mind, stayed on Jesus.” I think I’ll sing until I fade out of this life.

“Mr. Douglas! Mr. Douglas! Is that you I hear singing? I clean up around the park. I ran into a group of people, a couple hundred yards over in the picnic area, and was told if I happen to see you to tell you to hurry back, they are ready to go home.”

I'd LOVE to see this expanded into a short story, with more description of the man's excursion, etc. I had to laugh when I realized his "people" were so close...I think this has the potential to be a fantastic story.
