Our car trips usually consisted of me, my brother and my parents. It seems we always started out on the hottest day of the year and came home on the coldest. When you’re a child every car trip seems like an eternity.
We would spend a week packing up the car to go who knows where, but my father would give the impression that he knew where. He would dig out wall maps and folding maps of all kinds and start drawing on them mapping out the route. We would then get excited, still not knowing where we were going or what we would be doing, but just the same we supported Dad with our excitement.
When the day finally came to leave, we would all cram into the old 68 wagon and through pillows and mounds of blankets, Dad would back out of the driveway. Well, it didn’t take more that 45 minutes or so and I became extremely board (something I still do today). Then I would start the infamous “are we there yet” routine. Mom would reassure me that it would be soon, even though it never was. I would also start in with the bathroom requests, one thing my father never did was stop. Once he started that was it until we arrive at our destination.
Our vehicles were always something to be desired too, with overheating engines when we would come upon a hill or no brakes as we descended the other side. Dad was a nervous driver and it seemed he always sniffled when things weren’t going well. He sniffled a lot when I was young.
As I try to equate those experiences with today, I realize that I am on a trip of sorts, not knowing what I will be doing or where I am going but knowing that the Lord has me in the palm of his hand watching my every step and guiding my every move. This is a trip that I want to be on.
