Polly oozed warmth and caring. She gave us special little presents……like a pencil with our own name on it. My name. At home I was invisible. No one called me by name. But here was proof I had one.
I looked forward to Sunday School class…….not for the lesson, but for the presence of Polly. I felt loved in that room.
When I transitioned on to the next class…..and teacher…..Polly kept in touch with me. She would find me at church and give me one of those hugs that became so very important to me. She still gave me little gifts. She continued to make me feel special……at least for the moments I was around her.
I didn’t know how to tell her thank you. Words would not have been enough. I couldn’t verbalize what she had done for me on the inside.
Polly has been gone for many years. But I know one of the “stars” in her crown is because of the love she showed in that little girls Sunday School class. We learned so much more than words on a page. For me, she was Jesus with skin on.
