Now I am not at all sure just what ‘the look’ is comprised of, but I know it wields a great deal of power and authority. I have used it at the dinner table while entertaining guests. At church I have seen chatty teenagers sit up straight and don a pious countenance when receiving ‘the look’ from their mother seated in the choir loft. I have even observed an entire classroom of wiggly Second Graders suddenly snap to attention when blasted with ‘the look’.
While I cannot adequately describe ‘the look’ to you, I feel certain I could pick it out if confronted with a page of common ‘looks’.
While ‘the look’ of bygone days brought animated laughter to our family gathering, I remember a time in history when ‘the look’ did not inspire laughter. I think of a man named Peter. One of his friends, Luke, wrote of the events on the evening Jesus was arrested. Earlier in the evening Peter had declared his allegiance to Jesus saying he was ready to go to prison or even death for Him. Jesus warned Peter that he was not as strong as he boasted, and would actually deny that he even knew his beloved Master.
Sure enough, seated around a campfire later that evening, Peter was confronted by a young servant girl. He vehemently denied Jesus three times—once with an oath! Luke recorded, “Just as he (Peter) was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered…and he went outside and wept bitterly.†(Luke 22:60-62 NIV)
Amazing! One look from Jesus changed Peter’s entire destiny. Peter gave up a business that he was quite competent at, he gave up material comforts, and eventually he gave up his life. If only more could experience ‘that look’ from Jesus, and let Him turn their lives around.
Someday I will see Our Lord face to face. Because I have accepted His saving grace, I anticipate Him to look at me with mercy and forgiveness. And it will be powerful. It will undoubtedly drive me to my knees in awe and worship.
