How Far is Far? | Writing Challenge By Marlene Custer 10/14/20 |

I remember when I was a child my family planned for weeks for a trip to visit my grandparents. We baked, we packed, and we assembled lunches. The distance was about five hours by car. It was a big deal at that time. It was a lot further than around the block, the length of a football field, or even the distance of a marathon.
When I finished high school, I chose a college that was seventeen hours by car. When my parents left me there to return home for the first time, thinking about the distance caused butterflies to dance in my stomach! I would not be going home for several months. The trip to my grandparents didn’t seem so far.
Fast forward several years. The opportunity came to go to Thailand—halfway around the world! It took twenty plus hours of flying at a speed of 500 plus miles per hour to arrive at our destination. The distance to college does not seem far at all!
Recently, two astronauts were propelled into space, reaching a speed of 17,500 mph. They traveled for 19 hours at that speed before arriving at their destination. Wow! Halfway around the world doesn’t seem so far!
As I am approaching eternity, I look forward to exploring our universe. Scientists estimate that the diameter of the universe is 93 billion light-years. One light-year is 5.88 trillion miles. Nope, the distance to the space station doesn’t seem so far after all.
Who can even imagine how much more there is to explore beyond our universe. How far is far? It depends on where you have been!
