I just returned from the Supermarket where I purchased a pack of cigarettes for $3.48 including taxes; this was the cheapest ones on the market. What is really upsetting is just last week this brand was less than $3.00 tax included.
For some reason it seems that the price of everything is on the rise except for the common workers wages. The price of gasoline has come down in comparison to a year ago, but even it is on the rise again.
When the consumer goes to the Supermarket to buy food and household products, in comparison to a year ago, the price has almost doubled in some products. At a local Wal-Mart in Oneonta, Al. the price of the store brand 6oz. can of Tuna has doubled in the space of one year.
There is also a tax which has been super-imposed on Tobacco products called a “Sin” tax. This is also placed on alcoholic beverages driving their prices to an all time high. What seems to bother consumers the most is just how high the price of products is going to climb, and where the cut off point is. The sky seems to be the limit on everything that is being sold.
Concerning the “Sin” tax on the products mentioned above, how can legislation justify calling it such a tax when it is from the legislature as well, that the decree is stating separation of church and state. If legislation is calling this a “Sin” tax, isn’t that stating judgement that smoking and drinking is a “Sin”.
In Jefferson County Al. , in the city of Birmingham, it is alright to sell Tobacco products to consumers, but it is not alright for that same consumer to use the product in most areas of the city. They want the taxes incurred for the county, but they don’t seem to let the people, which built and established the county, have the freedom they deserve.
Oil companies charge the consumer the prices set forth per gallon used to make a profit, which is understandable, and their executives should make a good salary, there is no doubt concerning this, but when a CEO brings home a salary of Fifty Million Dollars a year, and the company makes a net profit upwards of Six Billion Dollars per year, something seems wrong.
In conclusion to all of this, the average worker today makes sometimes less than $25000.00 per year while the price of all products is on the rise, so where is the top? When does someone step up and say products are high enough? It would seem that, if the sellers would lower their prices, there would be more sales made because of affordability; but instead they just keep increasing, causing a hardship on the average consumer. Where will it end?
