Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday April 16, 2009

Every now and then I get a real surprise and rare though they be, they add a little kindness and hope to my life. Sometimes dreams do come true.

Victor Hugo has long been one of my writer heroes, and his "Hunchback of Notre Dame" moved me deeply long before I was a teen. He claimed Christ and was deeply moved himself by the plight of the poor people of Paris, people he immortalized in his book, "Les Miserables."

When I began to watch the clip at The Great Blonde's insistence, I thought as they were talking to Susan Boyle on "Britains Got Talent" this is going to be a painful joke. It was obvious that Susan is "challenged" and I, in deference to my younger sister do not enjoy making fun. When Susan hit the first note, I knew the blonde had put me onto something truly great. Before my tear dimmed eyes I watched and listened as a frumpy, middle aged, "Challenged" never been married or kissed lady who sings in her church experienced her dreams coming true. To say I was blessed by her voice is British understatement. To say I reached the heights as she reached peaks seldom reached in song, is also understatement. Susan Boyle, a Scottish angel unaware.

I deal with people who are beaten and broken, strewn along the sands of rough time and here before my eyes the most unlikely woman stepped out of obscurity into the realm of the brightest stars.

Her song, "I Dreamed a Dream" from the play "Les Miserables" is a perfect fit. The last verse states:

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living,
So different now from what it seemed...
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed...

Life has a way of killing the fondest and most beautiful dreams. But Susan's step into the light should bring fresh hope that Christ is the dream giver and re-newer, to each of us. As Susan reached the pinnacle, I thought again of Joel 2:28:

"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:"
