"My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge." (Proverbs 5: 1& 2)
This is a father's advice to have a teachable spirit, and to gain from his wisdom and insight so that the child may "maintain discretion". Having discretion means knowing the right thing to do or say in a particular circumstance. Sometimes an apt word, sometimes silence. Doing so preserves knowledge, keeps you from "playing the fool". Value wisdom and insight, and set your mind to be teachable.
