LORD, MY HEART IS NOT HAUGHTY NOR MINE EYES LOFTY: NEITHR DO I EXCERCISE MYSELF IN GREAT MATTERS, OR IN THINGS TOO HIGH FOR ME.
SURELY I HAVE BEHAVED AND QUIETED MYSELF, AS A CHILD THAT IS WEANED OF HIS MOTHER: MY SOUL IS EVEN AS A WEANED CHILD……Psalm 131:1&2
Jesus always used the analogy of childlike character as a standard for, dare I say humility before God.
He said we should be like little children in many ways in order to be able to enter heaven
Let the little children come unto me, debar them not.
Mark 9:36&37-…And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them; And when he had taken him in his arms , He said unto them, Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name , receiveth me : and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me , but Him that sent me.
What does it all mean?
Why of all traits this particular characteristic which does not rate a child high in the matured adult eye:
1 Corinthians 13:11… When I was a child, I spoke as a child I understood as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things
1 Corinthians 14: 120… Brethren, be not children IN UNDERSTANDIING howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Our Lord’s analogy carries a lot of weight and He does not say what He does not mean as it is seen in the whole of the Bible that even though the child is childish, even sometimes naughty etc, the key trait that sets him apart and endears him to the heart of our Lord is the innocent trust and total dependence on and faith in whoever he regards as the adult, father or mother figure and authority in his life.
This trust should never be betrayed but often, the opposite is the case unfortunately.
Matthew 18:3-6…. And said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me , it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
God is perfect in His ways and His words, to trust in Him and walk with Him we need to come off high horses, forsake self aggrandizement, quit the class of the cynical intellectuals, sarcastic scientist and all the know-all of this world who believe in the universe more than the creator of the universe!
He encourages us to reduce to nothing to be lifted high by Him.
A walk with Him means total dependence and faith in Him and His ways every step of the way.
This sounds preposterous to the mind that is versed in the ways of the world, science, technological breakthroughs and outstanding human endeavors.
The wisdom of our Lord Jesus is seen in the story below which I found very interesting, funny but deep with meaning.
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a
human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was
very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a
human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.
The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.
