God’s Will
“You have bereaved ME.
All these things are against ME.
You would bring down MYy gray hair with sorrow to the grave.
Why did you deal so wrongfully with ME.”
These are the words of a man who should have the wisdom of old age, who is the leader of a large clan, and who has had two electrifying encounters with God. Sadly, after all that, Jacob still thought the world revolved around him. Misfortunes and disappointments were an affront to him; other people continued to fail him. He chose to set his horizon around his own being rather than look outside and discern a greater plan. His hopes were set on Benjamin, so Benjamin had to be kept home “safe”. He didn’t know that his physical salvation was in the hands of Joseph, who “was no more”. Rescuing Simeon wasn’t important until the food ran out. He didn’t want Judah to stand up and offer himself in place of Benjamin. Jacob was in no way advancing God’s purposes; he was fighting them. God saved the Hebrews in spite of him.
God’s plan can be worked either through a person, or around him. In one way this is a reassurance to the weak of faith: “Don’t look at me – I’m only taking up space here.” But what lost opportunities! Breaking out of lethargy, safety, and self-centeredness creates opportunities so valuable that Jesus called them “treasures”. If you are walking with God and truly desire to be a part of His plan and purpose, God will place His desires in your heart. The key is wanting God’s will to be done, not your own. “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).
