A new reality is beginning to take hold of those who have made their journey through the lessons of the psalms this far. “Lord, I have loved being in your house, it is the place where honor lives.” We must mind our manners while visiting that fair house and leave all negative thoughts outside.

If the last lesson was like learning to ride a bike, then here we have a teenager in his first car. There is a sense of tapping into a power that has only been dreamed of before, of being ready to go wherever conviction leads because a new, far horizon is visible for the first time and we might have the power to get there.

27. Feeling the Strength

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When my enemies came against me with their lies and trouble, they stumbled and fell. Though I am surrounded by thousands who are against me, I will not be afraid; I will take heart and be confident.

One thing I want from my Lord that I will seek after: that I may live in his house all the days of my life, to see his beauty and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble He will shelter me in his garden, He will protect me in his secret chapel and He will set me on a rock.

And now my head is lifted up above our enemies that are all around. I will offer sacrifices of joy and I will sing my song of praise to the Lord. Hear the sound of my voice, O Lord; have mercy and answer me.

When You said, “Seek my face,” my heart answered. Your face I will seek. Don’t hide far away, don’t put your servant away in anger. You have been my help; don’t leave me or forget about me, God of my salvation.

When my mother and father sent me out into the world, the Lord did lead me. Teach me your ways, Lord, and lead me in a plain path because of my enemies. Don’t let me fall to the will of the liars and hypocrites I must deal with, they live on cruelty. My heart would fail without the hope of seeing your power at work here on earth.

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage and He will strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord.

The gifts are glorious and valuable beyond knowing. We are allowed to feel the presence of the Lord’s own private garden and secret chapel. The rock we stand upon is the feeling of the strength of our salvation and is a new high point on our path through the Psalms. If God is for us, who can stand against us? (Rom 8:31) There is no need to fear, not our enemies nor ourselves; not now, not ever. We even have the courage to ask a favor.

We wish to live in God’s house, to see his beauty and enquire at his temple. We are being shown that his will is done, was always done and is being done, and we will be a part of it if we have the courage to act it, to believe it and to feel it. Practice your prayers daily: don’t let those stray negative thoughts lead you into the temptation of forgetfulness. And so we stand, with a little smile and heads held high amid a thousand enemies, looking up to the source of all courage, singing a happy song of praise.
