Marriage
The gowns and tuxedos (monkey suits)…
Such a hassle, such a headache.
You have to make lists… send invitations…meet deadlines.
You have to decide on menus and photographers and budgets,
So much tension! Why I get a headache thinking about it…..
So why bother?
Why do millions of people all over the world still go through this tradition…
Because it is a way to make a mark in time – to draw a line in the sand – to make a statement before God, and your family and friends, that “I have chosen this person above all others”. You are saying that this person has top priority in your life from now on.
It is a public commitment of a heart-to-heart decision.
It is a reference marker, a place to point back to long after the tuxedo has gone back to the rental store, and the wedding dress no longer fits. This marker stands as a beacon during those times when you wonder what you ever saw in that person (and believe me, those times will come).
You see, we humans are fickle and selfish.
To make a true commitment to another person is a major event. It seems like it is almost against our nature at times, because we are so me-oriented.
So, to go through the effort of getting licenses and blood tests, and all the other hoops we go through, well that is huge.
Have you someone you treasure, and want to make that kind of commitment to? Do they want to reciprocate? Make your promises to each other and then, by God, keep them to the very best of your ability. And when that is not enough, then ask God for the wisdom and strength to do better than your best.
Marriage takes hard work, it is tough allowing someone else to be more important than you are - especially if you are trying to be married without leaning on Him for guidance.
God doesn't promise that your marriage will succeed, but He promises that through it all, thick and thin, He is available, never leaving or forsaking you, and that is HIS promise to you.
