Encouragement
In Exodus, God has brought His people to Egypt to preserve them through some very hard times. He does that with His own. They still come to know leanness of spirit in the hard times, but it serves its purpose in driving them closer to Him. What did God tell Moses when He called him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt- “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt . . .” The Jews wailed long and loud, finally breaking down and crying out to their God, and He answered.
Where was Moses when he heard this? In Midian. How’d he end up there? Wasn’t he the son of Pharaoh’s daughter? Wasn’t he a “castle kid”, growing up in the luxury of the king? Yes, but Moses was Moses, and his reaction to a situation landed him in Midian. Moses’s own personality, his conviction as a Hebrew, and his passion about it, led him to expose his Jewishness and to his flight.
People’s passion about issues, our intense desire to right wrongs, to administer justice, is often misdirected, but always under sovereign control. God always takes us as we are, and uses the way He made us, to effect His purposes. What if Moses had left that situation alone, and continued living in Pharaoh’s house? Would he not have possibly met and married an Egyptian woman and so intermingled Israel’s blood with Egypt’s? His passion about his people led to a rash act, which signalled a plot turn that kept his people pure and distinct in Egyptian society.
So, the plan of God to keep His people separate from their surroundings works out in the very biological, emotional, and psychological being that Moses was, and we are. He might not have ended up shepherding in Midian, if he hadn’t been a passionate Jew in Egypt. Who he was took him where he was, in Midian. There’s where he found out about his Lord’s plan for the rest of his life.
God’s plan shows us where to go, and His sovereignty gets us there.
Tell me what you think, I’m just thinkin out loud!
