Do you ever remember something that happened when you were a very young child, remember so
vividly that you feel like time has stood still? I'm thinking now of an incident that must have taken place over 50 years ago. I was sucking on a cough drop,when I accidentally swallowed it. It was so painful; my chest hurt. When my older Sisters and I explained the situation to our Mother, she thought Grandma might be able to help. She was a retired Nurse,came to our aid when we had the Childhood Diseases of measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Those baking soda baths were like a miracle cure! We lived just a few houses apart;so she had my Sisters walk me up to Grandmas'. I'm not sure how old I was, maybe four-six years old. I can remember Grandmas' remedy, which now amazes me.
It is just such a good example of old fashioned common sense! She had me lay down on her bed with
an electric heat pad on my chest. As the heat comforted me, it would also slowly dissolve the lodged cough drop. The surprise was waking up later! I had gone from pain to total relaxation! Those memories of how peaceful I was can still give me those warm fuzzy feelings even now. Aren't our Grandmas' wonderful? Was it her heating pad or just the security of Grandmas' love that let me rest that day?
This all leads me to focus on the pains of adult life. Maybe sometimes events are a “pretty tough pill to swallow.” Well, I”ll turn to The Comforter, The Holy Spirit, allow Him to melt away the hurts and aches. He has provided the perfect rest for all who will surrender to Him. Yes, Yes, I am “Leaning On The Everlasting Arms!
