God's Alarm Clock

No matter where I am, nor what time of day,
God's alarm clock ticks softly in my ear.
As the first light of morning spills over the horizon,
It invites me to begin another day.

Hurriedly, I rush from bed,
Racing against the clock, to complete the tasks ahead.
"Listen, I've something to say."
"Today will be filled with challenge."
"I'm ready, Lord, bring it on."

He laid before me the people I'd see,
As well as the things I'd do.
He made one last request of me,
The hardest one of all:
"Whatever you do today, take time to listen to me."

By noonday, I still hadn't stopped to listen.
I'd moved through the day unaware of His presence.
And then, the alarm clock rang like never before.
What I'd thought was an alarm clock,
Was the the shrill sound of a siren.

I'd forgotten to listen, and now no choices remained.
The one my Lord had given me to love, I'd forgotten.
"Lord, no," I pleaded, "Give me one more chance."
"Do you love him?" He asked.
"Yes, Lord, I do."

"Then tell him. Tell him in the evening.
Tell him in the morning.
Tell him at noonday.
Tell him as he puts his head to pillow."

"He's my gift to you, my child.
Know this.
If you fail to love him,
All your busy days won't bring him back,
Nor repair your broken heart."
