"IT IS FINISHED"

A drop of blood fell to the ground
And it told the ground – It is finished

And the ground told the grass
It is finished

And the grass told the herbs
It is finished

And the herbs told the trees
It is finished

And the trees told the birds
It is finished

And the birds told the clouds
It is finished

And the clouds told the stars
It is finished

And the stars told the angels
It is finished

And the angels told ….


I am not the author of this piece. When I first heard this anonymous poem around 1992, I was working on my third piano sonata. I was so inspired by the beauty of this poem that I named the first movement “It Is Finished” also.

Of course, our Lord Jesus Christ spoke these words, as he hung on Calvary’s cross. I often recite this poem to audiences before playing my Piano Sonata No. 3. I do not know the author’s name and cannot take credit for its existence. But I refuse to let it fall into obscurity and die. -- Darna Bedwell Gutter
