Larry Lilly's Letter Monday January 12, 2009
As we began this second work week of 2009 I feel compelled to deal with an emotion, oft mentioned biblically as a no no. This negative thought produces strong emotions and is the root cause of many of our illnesses. It is often called the opposite of faith.
Fear is one of the most mentioned topics in the Bible and is seldom a good thing unless it is instruction that if we fear God in the truest sense we do NOT have to fear man.
The idea of "be not afraid" is mentioned 54 times in the Word, while "fear not" is mentioned 148 times. These and similar terms concerning fear are used by Prophets, Angels, God the Father and Jesus Christ to encourage us to cast off fear.
The patient Job, who suffered the loss of all things including health, wealth, family and prestige made one of the most thought provoking statements in the entire canon of scripture when in the midst of his suffering he uttered these haunting words:
"For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me." Job 3:25
Dr. James Grey wrote a book called "The Strangest Secret" the premise of the book being, "we become what we think about most." It would do many good to do a word/phrase study on thoughts as revealed in scripture. I was in my 20's when I first read Mr. Grey's book and I spent much time thanking the Lord that while a teenager I did not become a tall, gorgeous brunette math teacher, whom I thought about constantly.
The Bible teaches plainly and God warns us of the truth that we in fact do have the tendency to attract to ourselves that which we focus on in our mind.
James Allen, a long time pastor of a mega church in Texas long before the term was coined said:
"The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors; that which it loves and also that which it fears."
The Apostle Paul gives plain instruction concerning a life style of fear when he warned us about living in fear:
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2Timothy 1:7
The media, politicians and too many pulpits are platforms of fear. I believe the Lord would have you and me to be advocates of Hope in God casting off every fear and following Him.
