GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT
1Timothy 6:1-12
We are in the end time already, perilous time truly abound as the coming of the Lord draws near. The hour of temptation has already come upon the entire world to try all the inhabitants of the earth. Like the people of the world, many Christians are equally abusing the privilege of serving the Lord by falling into temptation of anxiety, covetousness, envy, greediness and so on. People of corrupt minds, destitute of the truth supposing that gain is godliness are now around. The more the desires of their hearts are met the more they think that they are in God’s will. At the same time, the more they have the more they discover that their corrupt minds are unsatisfied. More possession, more comfort and yet contentment eludes them.
EXHORTATION TO GODLINESS AND CONTENTMENT
Luke 12:15; 1Timothy 6:6; Psalm49:17; Hebrews 13:5; Philippians 4:11; Ecclesiastes 5:15
The Lord Jesus Christ strictly warns “ …Take heed and beware of covetousness; for man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).
Godliness is an act by which the heart of a true believer panteth after the fullness of God’s grace. While contentment is an act of God’s grace by which believer is satisfied with God’s provision for his life.
A Christian comes to contentment not so much by way of more riches, honour or wealth. His way is quite opposed to the world. He can not be satisfied by anything on earth but God. He desires and prays to be filled with all the fullness of God.
AVOIDING THE HEART OF COVETOUSNESS
1Timothy 6:9-10; Joshua 7:21; Proverbs 28:20; 1Kings 21: 1-4; Proverbs 15:27
There is more treasure in the poorest man’s house if he is Godly than in the house of the greatest man in the world with all his fine hangings, dainty meals, costly beds, and finely wrought furniture.
If a Christian thought is “others are rich and I must be rich by all means”, Such Christian will fall into temptation and snare which draw many into perdition. Money is very good but the love of it at the detriment of your soul will make you to hate spiritual things and make you to love the things of the world. “Having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (1Timothy6:8). If you would get a contented life, do not grasp too much of the things of the world.
FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH
1Timothy 6:11-12; 2Timothy 2:4; 1Corinthians 9:25-26; Philippians 3:12, 14
The believers should not run rat-race course with unbelievers to achieve the things of this world. All that will pull you out from God must be fought. The fleshly motivated passions, sins, Satan and the world(the lust of eyes and pride of life).
“But thou, o man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, Lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and has professed a good profession before many witness” (1Timothy 6:11-12). And the godly man’s cry is “Whom have I in heaven but thee, and there is none upon the earth that I desire beside thee”. “Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the father and it sufficeth us” (Psalm 73:2; John 14:8)
