I asked for things I did not have,
even the good that were really bad.
When You were quiet I screamed at You.
While I was faithless You were true.

“Give me, Lord!” I prayed to You;
prayed so loud, shaking skies blue.
My pride left me haughty and insistent,
resistant I was to being repentant.

“I want her!”, I want that!”
Deep in me such prayers fell flat,
for I doubted the truth of Your love;
profane this doubt of the born-above.
My eyes and heart left me sad,
then so sad it left me mad.
“Why are You so mean and unfair.
Maybe You’re just not really there!”

Then I remembered of what I read,
of the One who rose from the dead.
That request in the garden He did not get,
and yet from You He had not left.

So I stayed, so I bowed,
to this God, the Lord of my now.
The yearning in me had not left,
yet life I had, and not His death.

Then one day, as I prayed,
joy o’ truth came to stay.
I saw how You were so true,
to grant me grace to follow You.

Not many will know my knowledge of this;
so few of us have this goodness.
Then I looked down to see under me
and I saw I stood on Your mercy.
So I’ll follow You all my life,
no matter how harsh the coming strife,
for coming up, from behind,
goodness and mercy, for You’re kind.
