Poetry
It was just a flash of light
Stood an angel before my sight
The One dwelling in unapproachable light
With a message had set him on this flight
When the angel entered my room
A Divine peace there did bloom
Yet strange things in my mind did loom
Although his presence did wipe out gloom
He said, ‘From the Almighty’s presence I am sent
To make you known of His intent
Rejoice! Blessed art Thou highly favored one
You shall beget God’s only begotten Son.’
Gabriel’s greeting made me tremble
With thoughts I could not assemble
‘In what manner?’ – with words I did fumble
This visitation made me all the more humble
Further, he said, ‘In your womb a son you will conceive
Name Him Jesus, later on you will perceive
That, Son of the Highest, everyone Him will call
Creatures above and below at His feet will fall.
I asked, ‘Yet, how can this be?
I am a virgin as you see’
He replied, ‘Holy Spirit will come upon you.
His power will overshadow you.’
All that he told me seemed impossible
Yet, I believed with God nothing is impossible
Angel told me the case of my cousin Elizabeth
With God everything is possible its He that blesseth
Then I said, ‘I am the Lord’s maidservant
Let it be to me according to His intent.’
Hearing my words the angel departed
While to Elizabeth’s house I departed.
Into the house of Zacharias I entered
With arms spread out Elizabeth I greeted.
She told me, ‘The babe in my womb leaped
The Holy Spirit filled me when you wished.’
She spoke in a voice so clear
‘Blessed are you among women don’t fear
The fruit of your womb will wipe away every tear
My babe leaped, as your voice he did hear.’
She continued, ‘Why is this to me granted?
The mother of my Lord has visited
Blessed is she who believed
Fulfillment will be of what God foretold.’
What is now called ‘Magnificat’ I sang
Whilst the angel’s message in my heart did rang
For three month’s in Elizabeth’s house I remained
Then, carrying a secret to my house I returned.
My husband to be was a godly man
He too trembled on hearing God’s plan
Tried ways and means to keep me from shame
He could not bear any stain to his name
Yet, God made everything wonderful
I was blessed to bear the name called ‘Wonderful’
God’s birth is not sheer worldly mirth
Celebrating without Christ is there any worth?
I crave not for honor
If that be so, God’s name I dishonor
Why did I receive God’s favor
Ponder this Christmas and receive His favor.”
