FAMILY DEVOTION
Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Mark 1:35; 2timothy 1:5; Joshua 1:8
Family devotion or family altar is essential part of Christian living. Most, if not all Christians believer in the value of family worship. But unfortunately, very few maintain a consistent family altar. This neglect as a reflection in Christian values of members of the family, especially the children. It takes discipline, efforts, and persistence to have a daily family worship. We should never allow the pressure of duty or involvement in activities to deprive us of the benefits of this scripturally way of developing and nurturing every members of our family.
For a consistent family devotion, the first thing to decide is the time that will be most suitable for the family. Usually, early in the morning and later in the evening. When everybody is still physically alert are the best times. Every member of the family should see family devotion as an integral part of the family life. Where there are young children in the family, they should not be kept awake till late in the night to participate in the family devotion. Instead, either father or mother could have a time of devotion with the children early, and of course in the simple language so that the children could understand.
Where family devotion is sustained, it helps such member of the family to know Christ better and prepare the children to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour.
Apart from providing spiritual nourishment, it deepens our knowledge of the scriptures and promotes communication among family members. It also bring a burden and concern for each other as individual needs and problems of the members of the family are mentioned and pray for. It provides an opportunity to teach children Christian values, and every members of the family their responsibilities to God, to the church, to the nation, and to one another.
During family devotion, time could be created for member of the family to learn some verses by heart or teach a new chorus or song. All these put together will establish every members of the family in the truth.. However, during the explanation of the text for the day or during prayer sessions, we should avoid using the opportunity to castigate any members of the family. This may cause disinterest and resentment. Rebuke and correction should be done in love but at a different time.
