Keep Spinning

As I sat on the front porch sheltered from the oppressive heat, I noticed a spider and its web extending from the porch railing to the roof. Without thought, I immediately got a broom and destroyed the web and the spider, or so I thought. Quite pleased with myself, I returned to the rocker and continued reading my book.

After dinner was made and a load of laundry put in, I retired again to the porch to enjoy the evening air. I was perplexed to find the spider that I thought I had killed once again spinning its web. My first impulse was to grab the broom again, but I heard that still, small voice say, “Watch.”

I had never observed a spider building a web before. It moved gracefully from point to point. Sometimes it scurried up and down or it would seem to let go and free fall to another point. Its actions amazed me. I was saddened at how quickly I had destroyed what it labored to make. Yet, it persevered. It began to build again even though I tried to stop it. The still, small voice whispered, “Don’t give up. Keep trying even when you get knocked down.” I smiled confidently and silently thanked the Lord. I now had a new determination to pursue my dream.

Has someone knocked down your dreams and goals? Keep laboring. Like a completed web provides food for the spider, your fulfilled dream or goal provides nourishment for your soul. Get up and keep spinning!
