To give is to lose something that you have in order to provide it to someone who didn't have it.
To the people we come in contact with in our daily lives, we can give our time, our love, our opinion, our money, our pain, and our pleasure. Most importantly, we can give people the knowledge of knowing about Jesus Christ.
Even if we are not rich with material possessions, we can give of our most important asset, ourselves. When we give of ourselves: our love, our heart, our feelings, our acknowledgement of others, it is more precious than any amount of wealth. Giving requires two people. If you have no people around to share life with, all the money in the world cannot replace love from other human beings. Yes, money can buy pleasure, all be it short-lived pleasure. However, it cannot buy true love. If you have to spend money to get people to want to be around you, that's not love, it's greed, blackmail, extortion, deceit, and most of all, it's sad.
I remember seeing my father no more than ten times in my thirty-nine years on this earth. Each time he would give me something that he had bought to try and replace all those years of not wanting to see me on birthdays, through countless surgeries, my marriage, the birth of my children, the latter of which he has never seen. He has my address, phone number, and email address, but chooses not to have any contact with me. So I think I can speak with authority on this. My father has plenty of possessions: a Porsche, two condos, and a fat bank account, but he is old and alone and will one day die that way, and it is sad. Parents, give of yourself and not of your money. The toy will be broke and in the floor in a week, but the memories of you playing catch and hide and seek with them will last a lifetime.
God recognizes and thinks it to be a great thing when we give all we have to Him: our money, our time, our hearts, our souls. God blesses those who bless others (Mark 12:43-44).
