Healing
The strength to go on despite the odds
By Chaplain Dan Langerock
Itzhak Perlman, the famous violinist, had polio as a child, and wears braces on both legs as a result. It takes hurculean effort and much pain to even walk across the stage to where he will be seated.
One time, at a concert at Lincoln Center in New York, he had seated himself and had begun to play when one of the strings broke on his violin. The sound of it echoed across the auditorium and a hush fell upon the crowd gathered there.
Everyone believed he would have to either walk off the stage and get a new string, quit the concert, or use a different violin. One cannot viably play three strings for such a difficult piece of music as he had been playing.
To the surprise of the crowd, he continued playing despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacle. It was something that supposedly could not be done, but Itzhak had done it beautifully.
Life is like this as well, at times. We lose a job, a mate, friends and family, as well as many others, and we are asked to go on inspite of this loss. We feel so vulnerable, alone, and empty like there is nothing to live for anymore.
God does not expect us to do this on our own, but is waiting for us to come to Him and tell Him how we feel and accept His help. In Romans 8:28, “For we know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” God takes even the bad things that happen to us and molds them into what is good for us. God is not surprised by the bad things that happen but He is able to turn them around for our good when we trust Him.
These hard things are not easy to go through for us, but God has promised He will never leave us or forsake us when we commit our trust to Him. Will you trust God with your hurts and problems today?
