Living near the Pacific Ocean, I have the delightful pleasure of watching the oceanic fog roll in at various times throughout the year – this silent misty blanket wraps the coastal cities in its dense marine layer, so thick and dense, in fact, that it seems you could reach out and touch it, taste it, smell it. Upon its entry, the city is subdued into a peaceful yet cautious serenity – much like a snowfall silences the inland cities in other states, making everything surreal.

This morning the foghorns sounded in the distance, awakening me from my sleep. I was awake, but not alarmed. The deep baritone moan of the foghorn is somehow soothing to me.

The dictionary explains that coastal foghorns sound when visual navigation aids such as lighthouses are obscured, thus providing ships with an audible warning of dangerous rocks, shoal, unsafe conditions nearby.

Perhaps the foghorns comfort me because they are also a reminder of the way the Lord sounds alarms to me that I am in unsafe territory – He may use a friend’s concern to shine His light in my heart, or the Word to be a beacon to my journey. And when my way is particularly obscured by emotion or circumstance, His Holy Spirit intercedes to sound warnings in my behalf and point me again to safety.


Oh Lord, thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Guard me as I navigate my way daily, guide my safe passage as I put my trust in Thee.
