Important Editorial Note: I am often accused of writing the daily Proverb in reaction to some event in a friend's life or some news report. I always get a chuckle out of that because all of these devotionals were written in the early 1990's for my children and the date rotation was set then. The following Proverb is as pertinent as tomorrows news. Do you think the Lord thought we might need to read this today?

"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender." (Proverbs 22:7)

This is simply a fact of life! Not only is it a fact of life today, it has been so for thousands of years. In this life the rich do rule over the poor for they give great attention not only to money, but power too. Probably most of us are neither rich nor poor, except as compared to others. Compared to a king we are poor, compared to most of the world we are rich. Conversely most of us are probably borrowers and when you are a borrower you are at the mercy of the lender. The lender makes the rules, the borrower follows them. That is the same relationship a master has with his servant. If you don't want to be a slave, you must not be a borrower, period. That is a great ideal, but most of us have to be borrowers sometime in our lives. When you do borrow remember your relationship with the lender, and don't resent it. The lender will call the shots, he is the master. You know what that makes you!
