The Human Heart

What is it about the human heart that rejects a loving God? Is it unbelief? Is it pride? If there was one thing you could put your finger on that is the main reason why men and women go though life without God, what would it be? Sin - pure and simple. Sin is the problem of the human heart. Always has been and always will be. Genesis 6:5 says “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Jesus said “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts; murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man.” Matthew 15: 19-20.

The human heart is evil above all. You only have to watch the 10 o’clock news to see that. Jesus said the heart is where every evil thought comes from.

Imagine with me for a moment. What if for one day we were given the ability to read the thoughts of everyone around us. Say for instance, you were in a room with 20 or so people and you knew their every thoughts. I believe you would see so much depravation it would be sickening. The depravity of the human heart would drive us to our knees in sorrow and repentance.

Remember the movie The Green Mile? In this fictional film, the main character, John Coffey had this ability. He saw all the evil in the hearts of others and it tormented him. He was willing to die for a crime he did not commit just so he could be free of the torment of seeing evil in the human heart. His only hope was heaven - a place where there is no sin.

Well, why can’t we realize on a daily basis that God knows our every thought. Can you imagine how much more He must be sickened by our evil hearts? We may fool the world, but God knows our hearts and He is grieved over our sin. Yet, He loves us.

What is the answer for our sin-sick hearts? The Lord, Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus died on the cross - willingly - to cleanse the world of sin. He took all the sins of the world, past, present and future upon Himself. He defeated death and the grave. Through Him, we can now approach the very throne of God for forgiveness. Jesus is the only way to cleanse our hearts of wickedness.

Through Jesus Christ, we have the blessed hope of heaven - a place where He will wipe away every tear and there will be no more sorrow, no more pain and no more evil. That’s the place my heart longs for. Does yours?

Listen to your heart - right now. Be very still and let His Holy Spirit speak into your heart of the forgiveness that can be yours. Allow His Spirit to convince your heart that this is truth. All you have to do is ask for that forgiveness and believe in your heart that He died for your sins. That He rose again to give you eternal life. It’s a free gift to all who would believe on Him.

Won’t you accept His gift? The Bible says if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. Today is the day of salvation. Repent of your sins. Do it today….your heart and your life depend on it.
