I have a friend battling cancer. I feel so very helpless standing on the sidelines 2,000 miles away, as she goes for treatments. I cannot do one thing to make her journey easier.

A coworker just found out his wife is having an affair. Another’s husband just lost his job of many years.

A friend found out their son was murdered. I am powerless to be of much comfort. Words just are not adequate to cover hurts this deep.

Everywhere I turn, the situations of life loom all around me. I turn to the right and there is grief; to the left, the agony of betrayal. Here is fear over what tomorrow will hold, there is anger over the economy.

I am helpless. I stand in my own quagmire of emotions, trying to grasp understanding. Life is overwhelming.

And yet, I am reminded that neither height nor depth, things present or things to come, nothing – NO THING – shall separate us from the love of God.

It is soothing to know that God is available in every circumstance to provide answers, to give wisdom, to comfort as no human ever could. He makes sense of the senseless. He shines the light of hope in the darkest events of our lives.

The Lord has never promised that we will live a life without tragedy. In fact, He says that in this world we WILL have tribulation, but we need not fear. We can rely on Him to direct our steps. His strength will be sufficient for each and every event that we encounter. His peace will be as a warm blanket against the chill of life.

Oh Lord, thank you that your ear is always tuned to the cries of your children, your heart is always soft in our regard. Thank you that you love us so much that you provide for us a thousand different ways every day. Your love is so high, so wide, so deep that I cannot grasp its full measure. I will spend a lifetime trying to understand it, delighting in receiving it, and happily sharing it with everyone that comes my way.
