When the people are frustrated
His name is a swear word.

When everything is going our way,
He is of no consequence.

Some announce that they are gods,
masters of their universe,
lords of their own destiny.

But then when the earth shakes
Tornadoes twist and hurricanes press down upon us,
or when there is a tsunami in our soul,
then we call out to Him.

When the banks fail,
Tragedy befalls us,
Or unfathomable acts of violence occur,
Then we remember your name
….For a while…..
Until all feels “safe again”

And then the cycle replays:
We stand on wobbly legs of self,
Shaking tiny fists into the air you made,
declaring “there is no God”
as if our declaration could make it so!

We cannot speak things into existence.
We were not there before the foundations of time
We do not order the sun to shine or the heavens to give forth rain.
You set the earth spinning on it course,
You numbered the stars and the planets.
You set all life in motion,
And still we pretend you are not there.
And thank you, thank you, thank you that still, in spite of this,
You desire a relationship with your people.
Forgive our arrogance and search our hearts.
Open our eyes and cause us to really recognize that you alone are God.
