The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin." (Proverbs 10:8)
Over and over in Proverbs we see a teachable attitude recommended for a good life. "Accepting commands" is a great key to a good life. Such an attitude requires humility, one of the key ingredients of a godly life. "Accepting commands" also shows that the teachable person recognizes authority, which is one of the first lessons of life that we must learn. Recognizing authority begins with obeying our father and mother, accepting their commands. It is interesting that the "wise in heart" are contrasted to a "chattering fool". The picture of a chattering fool is an image of someone who talks so much that they fail to hear. Another proverb warns that in many words there is no absence of sin. It is recommended to us to be quick to hear, and slow to speak. We should be listening to hear commands, and when we do speak we should chose our words carefully.
