"Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you." (Proverbs 9:8)
In Proverbs there are a number of descriptions of people on the wrong course in life. They are identified as fools, mockers, rebellious, wicked, greedy, proud or sluggards. These are descriptive attributes that identify the heart and mind of these persons. They all point to a self centered life. Such a person is generally pretty unpleasant to be around. A mocker is someone who makes fun of other people. Such an attitude reveals a proud self-centered heart that makes fun of other's shortcomings in order to supposedly increase their own importance. We have all seen mockers, first in the schoolyard, later in the workplace. In the subject proverb of today we are warned that correcting a mocker will only result in their getting angry with us. On the other hand, correcting a wise person, a teachable person, will be well received. Pray for the mocker, but save your advice for the wise person.
