“I don’t have to listen to you, you’re not the boss of me, you’re not my Father!”

Anyone who has done much childcare or teaching of young children has heard that phrase evoked when they have to step in and exercise authority over someone else's child who is in their care.

I heard the phrase again today when I was at the park, and I got to thinking: Why don’t I say that back to satan when he tries to tell me what to do? When he is there, just in the shadows, whispering tempting thoughts, or suggestions for questionable deeds, when he is trying to cause me to succumb to depression…. He whispers, in the hopes that I will listen. Each time I listen, he gains power over me – temporarily, until I recognize what he is up to (thanks be to God for His revealing light!).

For, truth be told, satan is not my Father. For my heavenly Father loves me. My Father speaks only truth. My Father does not tempt me. My Father will never abandon me, ridicule, torment or mistreat me. My God supplies all my needs.

Satan is merely the Father of Lies.

So, back off, satan, you’re not my Father, and you are definitely not the boss of me!
