Devotionals
Another day of work. The alarm blasts into the darkness far too early, summoning me to face another day. I grumble my way down the hall to begin my morning ritual of getting ready. Taking too long and dawdling at one point means I now have to rush myself in other areas. I forget to take the time for the Word, and the day goes downhill from there.
One situation after the other comes up at the office to rattle my veneer, and I give way to that feeling of being overwhelmed. The phones are ringing off the hook, one of my staff calls in sick, again, which means the department runs short-handed, again, until the afternoon crew joins us. I mutter my way around the office, counting the minutes until lunch time when I can escape the tension.
On my way to my break, I grab my devotional instead of my lunch box, and find that it was no “accident”…I am hungry, but not for food. I am hungry for the presence of my Lord. I know, I know, I am the one that pushed Him away this morning, but still my heart knew better. My spirit was craving communion with Him rather than a grab-and-go snack. No fast food, but eternal food instead.
I sat in the patio at work and dined on the Word, and delighted in the presence of my King. By the time lunch was over, I was refreshed enough to face the rest of my day with graciousness….confidence that the Lord had forgiven my bad attitude, and was restoring my soul. And I am reminded that the One who gave me this job would also give me the strength to see this day through to completion.
The passage I had meditated on?
“In returning and rest ye shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15

This is wonderful! A reminder that a bad day is one without the Lord in it.
Every morning, I start the day at breakfast with my wife, reading from Your Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers. Well, almost every day. When we are rushed and skip the reading (I read from other books, too, but Chambers is our favorite,) the day never seems to go right.
It's the same when I sing for the Lord. If I don't spend time with him beforehand, I am never as spirit-filled, and I can feel it. The day of a concert, I spend very little time practicing. I spend most of the day in prayer. If our souls are fed, everything else will follow.
