The days were long and boring in the desert but he had no choice because that was where he fled to live for the rest of his life. He now had a family of his own which was nice and comforting, but still life in the desert was not how he had envisioned his future.

Moses was shepherding his father-in-law’s herd, as he had done every day for the last 40 years when, he suddenly saw a bush on fire. At first he thought the heat of the sun had probably caused it, but as he watched he noticed that the bush had not been consumed… he was intrigued.

Without hesitation, he went to take a closer look at that incredible sight. When he got nearer something even more extraordinary happened. He heard a powerful voice—a voice with such authority that it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. It was God. That was the day Moses first met God.

Just like Moses, we must all have a personal experience with God. Going to church, hearing about God, listening to other people’s experiences with Him and even having His power manifest in our lives every so often just isn’t enough.

This is the very reason many Christians end up giving up in their faith. They are able to hold on to God’s promises for a little while but it soon becomes impossible to have faith in someone they have never met.

Many people want to have this experience with God but don’t do what’s required in order to have it. God will not simply appear in front of you. Go back and read about Moses’ first time again. You’ll see that firstly he was alone. God speaks to us when we are by ourselves. He won’t speak when we’re busy with others or wrapped up in thoughts of situations which we are going through. God comes to us when we’re having a reality check.
You can be in the midst of a crowd but still be alone—as long as you are being honest with yourself and not worried about what others will think or say about you.

The second thing you’ll notice is that Moses was required to remove his sandals as a sign of recognition and respect that God is superior. Some people want to have an encounter with God but they don’t recognise Him in the pastor’s preaching or in the voice that speaks to them in their mind. They’re too quick to dismiss those words as nothing. Other people expect God to come down to their level and respect their faith, as if they were doing Him a favour by having an encounter with Him!

Moses was so humble that his excuses even saddened God. He eventually accepted God’s promises and went on to conquer them. Moses only became a great leader after he accepted God’s will for his life. It was then that he changed. He became a man of God.

If you want to have an encounter with God. Do what Moses did. Don’t have expectations from God, just be yourself, be openhearted, let go of all the excuses and sins and give your whole self to Him.

Your first time can never be mistaken… You have an assurance that comes from within and when it happens to you, you’ll know about it. If you have any doubts about your experience with God then it hasn’t happened to you yet.
