Mummy – A reward in itself

A thought flashed back to a strange conversation I had many years ago when my daughters and I went shopping the other day.

Dejavu , maybe. I realized how time passes by and opinions of life change with the different seasons of womanhood. Let me take you back with me 10 yrs ago . Young , independent , only person to spend money on was myself so shopping used to be really fun.

My sister on the other hand was a mum and one day I saw fit to question her on how she never shops for herself, always for her kids first. She used to be in my wardrobe all the time. I couldn’t understand how she would never put aside a little money at least to get herself something nice to wear. She used to tell me , you will never understand until you are a mother.

As true as cookies, 10 yrs later I walk into a store and my eyes glisten at the gorgeous outfits that will look amazing on my daughters. Time flies by and seasons change and we mothers change with the seasons as well. Its true, something happened the day we had kids. There came along someone else that needs me more.

We grow from being self-absorbed to becoming child absorbed. We move from being selfish to selflessness. My daughter asked me once, mummy, if you had the opportunity to turn back the clock in life, would you. I looked at her and said I would never turn back the clock in any aspect of my life because that would mean missing out on them. You will agree with me when I say life without kids will be colourless, very boring and extremely dull.

You know ladies; no matter where life has taken you and how difficult the road has been we must be so blessed to have our children. Children are a heritage of God and the greatest blessings we could ever receive. They are the gifts that keep on giving.
I am not interested in material giving. But more the gift of love, hugs, kisses, special memories and treasured moments of triumph.

The seasons of womanhood vary and sometimes to the extreme. Where we once had matching bags and shoes, now we have matching nappy bags or sports kits. It is truly difficult to look gorgeous and sophisticated with paint on your fingers after a project or flour on your face after baking. Children have amazing eyes, they don’t see the less gorgeous mum with flour and paint, they see the cake and the time spent doing projects.

Mothers, I encourage you to take a step back if you are rushing and acknowledge your kids and take some time out to do something special with them. Somewhere along times frame, we were entrusted with lives. Life is such a valuable gift and the correct deposit into one’s life will bring forth a reward too wonderful to fathom.

Child rearing will not earn you an oscar or even employee of the year .It will never increase your bank balance, may just send you into overdraft but it will give you a host of laughter, a bank of memories and a treasure of original art, made especially for you using the finest crayons crayolla can offer.


Life is so hectic with all the bustling of the corporate jungle; we forget how to enjoy the greatest role we have which is motherhood. We may never be the perfect mothers but practice is said to make things perfect. If we practice long enough, we will be sure to get a few things rights.

So many women are chasing their youth and you can’t do that when they have a youth to care for. Someone has to grow up and that’s got to be you. Someone has to be the responsible one and you have to be that person. Take a look at yourself and ask yourself whether you would want your daughters one day to be just like you or would you want your sons to marry someone just like you. However you answer these questions, be sure that your influence in your home will rub of on your children, one way or the other. Ten years from now, you may be standing on the opposite side of a younger version of you. I hope you are blessed with the result. Motherhood is very understated in our present day but cherish it as the most important role you will ever have.

Some mums stay home, others work, it does not devalue a woman in any way. Mum is mum in any light at all times. Even if life has not been kind to you and you have faced many hardships, don’t ever turn back the clock of life and miss the most amazing moments of womanhood and that is the mother phase. Motherhood is a reward in itself, it may never be acknowledged or even accredited but in your heart, you will find satisfaction.

I salute you mothers, every one of you. You have a tough role. Follow the example of Christ and your children will follow your example. Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ daily. For every wrinkle you get and every laugh line you carry, for every size you grow out of after childbirth, every 20 something jeans that won’t fit you again, being a mum just makes it worthwhile.

Never abandon your path of motherhood because a mother’s prayer never goes unanswered before the throne of God. You have the God-given authority to pray your children through every obstacle into greater territory. You have the power to push them beyond boundaries into limitless victories. The heart of a mother will never accept defeat or even retreat. Keep going mums for great is your reward.

A prayer for You
Dear Lord Jesus , bless every mother young and old reading this article. I release a prophetic word over their lives that their children will carry the mantle of God’s anointing and become mighty men and women for his kingdom. Let every Godly deposit these mums have imparted into their children’s lives bring forth harvests and abundant fruit. Comfort every mother that needs comfort. Lead every mother to the right door that needs direction. Meet with their every need , Grant them the desires of their heart and even their whispers as well. Lord , go ahead and answer their prayer before they even finish asking. In Jesus name . Amen
